Convicted sex offender Adam Johnson has been urged to convert to Islam by Muslim criminals, it has been claimed.
The former Sunderland player was offered protection by Islamic inmates after several other convicts threatened to slash his throat.
Subsequently, the convicts said the 30-year-old must convert to Islam as part of the protection deal.

Sources have told the Daily Star that Johnson has been spotted praying but has yet to join the religion.
Johnson, who is serving a six year sentence after engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan, is said to have asked to be moved from Moorland Prison, in South Yorkshire, but his request has been rejected.
One source said: 'At first he was unwilling to take up the offer because he thought he was going to get a transfer out of Moorland, but that’s a non-starter.
'Now it looks like he is having second thoughts because he doesn’t have any friends who are tough enough to watch his back and prison can be a very lonely place if someone is out to get you.'
Earlier this year, Johnson was secretly filmed by a fellow prisoner discussing his sexual offences conviction in the laundry room at the Category C prison.

During one particularly shocking moment another inmate points out that the former Sunderland winger did not rape his victim - only for Johnson to reply: 'I wish I f****** did for six years.'
The Ministry of Justice announced it would be launching an investigation into the Johnson footage, with prison chiefs concerned about the mobile phone was smuggled into the jail.
A spokesman said: 'We are committed to making prisons places of safety and reform and are stepping up measures to find and block illegal mobile phones.
'Those who break the rules will be punished and can face extra time behind bars. An investigation is under way.'
Moorland holds around 1,000 prisoners, of which 340 are sex offenders.
Johnson was jailed last year for grooming, kissing and touching the girl.
